ALF movie on the way

And now for the most bizarre news story of the day… Sony has been raiding the ’80s sitcom cupboard and is planning to bring ALF to the big screen with a mixture of live-action and CGI.

The original TV show told the story of Gordon Shumway, a common or garden alien who accidentally crash-landed in the garage of a suburban American family. Unfazed by this development, they promptly adopted him as a pet and all manner of charming antics ensued.

Obviously reading that synopsis as code for “box office gold”, Sony has snapped up the rights to the character with The Smurfs producer Jordan Kerner hired to develop the project. Having already seen The Smurfs rake in $563 worldwide, the studio’s thinking perhaps becomes a little more understandable…

Happily for fans of the original show, original star Paul Fusco will return to voice the cuddly alien critter, this being the ship he’s been waiting for for more than two decades. Top marks to him for patience.

No release date has been established as yet, with finding a director the first order of business. In the meantime, you can look forward to The Smurfs 2 , which is set to land in the US on 31 July 2013.
